other circumstances

affecting the value of the Office.

Inspection of primary and secondary schools; chiefly for Chinese boys and girls and general administrative and advisory duties (staffing and equipment of Govern- ment Schools, etc.)

The post is for a man; and the candidate should have a University Degree and, preferably, a Diploma in Education also. If the candidate lacks local knowledge he should have a specially wide experience of general inspectional duties in primary and secondary schools.

A knowledge of colloquial Cantonese would be a valuable asset, and the study of the language, though not compulsory, will be facilitated by grant of an allowance to cover the cost of a native teacher.

£1100 to £1300 by £50 annually.

A temporary levy on the salary of Govern- ment officers at the rate of 21% on the first £240, 5% on the next £360, 71% on the next £400 and 10% on the next £400 is in force.

The currency of Hong Kong is the Hong Kong dollar which has no fixed exchange value with sterling. For the purpose of payments in the Colony, sterling salaries are at present converted into Hong Kong dollars at rates fixed from time to time by the Government and not necessarily corres- ponding with the exchange value of the dollar.

A reduction of 4% from salary is made as contribution to the Widows' and Orphans Pension Scheme.

When

Partially furnished quarters are when possible provided, but the number of quarters is limited, and they are not usually allotted to an officer with no wife or children in the Colony. An officer occupying Government quarters pays a percen tage (the current rate is 7% but is subject to alteration) of his salary as rent. quarters are not available, rent allowance is at present paid to a married officer who rents a separate self contained tene- ment on a scale graduated from $150 to $250 per month, Less 6% of the officer's salary.
